Historic Greenville was named for General Nathaniel Greene, a commander during the Revolutionary War. The town was established at the time Meriwether County was created in 1828. It was established near the center of the county to become the county seat. The town’s courthouse was built about 1903, but burned down in 1976. The original courthouse was destroyed by a tornado in 1893.
Greenville boasts of many beautiful antebellum homes that are listed on the state and national historical registers. One such building is the Meriwether County Courthouse, which stands on the square in Greenville. The courthouse was built in 1903 and replaced the original courthouse that was destroyed by a tornado in 1893.
Today, with a population of more than 1,100 Greenville’s is a thriving community steeped in historic richness.
